Imagine for a moment that you have booked a vacation to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, or another beautiful Caribbean travel destination. The closer your travel dates are coming you, your partner, family and/or friends are getting more and more excited. So you start wondering… How is the weather in the Riviera Maya?
Then you see the current weather forecast on accuweather.com showing the current weather for Playa del Carmen and it doesn’t look good. Your heart sinks… But before you get carried away let me give you a little piece of advice.
Don’t trust the weather reports for the Carribean!
A very common habit is to look things up on the internet to get familiar with the area, things to do in Playa del Carmen or hotels in Cancun. Besides the sightseeing and the attractions, the weather plays an important role in the outcome of your well-deserved vacation. So checking the weather forecast is perfectly normal, and usually helps to predict the weather for a certain location.
Let us get into the details of the weather here at the Riviera Maya, which includes the south of Cancun, like Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, and Tulum. The climate at the Mexican Caribbean is semi-tropical with a yearly average temperature of 26 ° Celsius or 80° degrees Fahrenheit.
The Summer Weather in The Riviera Maya
During the summer temperatures easily rise up to 37.7° Celsius or 100° degrees Fahrenheit. On the 1st of June, hurricane season officially starts, this then ends on November the 30th. This doesn’t mean that you will necessarily have to deal with hurricanes should you plan your vacation during that period. It only means that tropical storms may occur if you are unlucky. The same applies for the rainy season which starts in May and ends in October.
Since the Riviera Maya is located at the Caribbean Coast the weather circumstances are always benefiting a quick rain or thunderstorm. These weather changes are very local, sporadic and most of the time within twenty minutes the rain is gone.
Because of the Caribbean Sea, the high humidity and temperature differences between the water and the air, the weather forecast most of the time predicts rain and thunderstorm, especially during the rainy season. Many times the forecast predicts 85% chance of rain, but that does not mean that it will rain at your hotel or the places where you are planning to go. The temperature prediction is much more accurate and in my opinion, is the more important factor.
If you want to see the current weather, just take a look at the webcams around the Riviera Maya. You can see live footage of webcams for the following locations – just click on the location: Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, 5th Avenue, Cozumel and Xcaret
Listen to the locals
As a personal note. I arrived at Playa del Carmen in 2012, and I regularly checked the weather channel because I was used to doing so. After two weeks I gave up because it was always wrong!
Do not panic if the weatherman is predicting bad weather for your vacation. Do not get stressed out about something you do not have in your hands as you just never know how it will turn out, once you are in your hotel.
Will the Weather Effect Your Tour?
With regards to tours and excursions, you should always show up at the agreed time and meeting point, no matter what the weather (forecast) looks like. In case it is raining at your hotel, chances are very high it will not rain at your tour destination.
Besides that, we provide umbrellas, just in case. By the way, we are using our umbrellas 10 times more often in order to protect us from the sun rather than rain.
So, just relax and look forward to a great vacation at the beautiful Riviera Maya. The aim of our team is to make your day the best day of your vacation and the weather plays just a very small role in that. Feel free to leave comments below.
We are happy to help you with planning your dream vacation.
